Developing business partnerships

Forward-thinking staff at the Coleshill School have teamed up with leading global automotive supplier, the Sertec Group, to boost employment opportunities for young people.

This week a team of staff visited Sertec’s head office in Coleshill to develop a careers and employability strategy for students at the Coleshill School and the wider local community. Both organisations also looked at how they could become business partners and support each other, particularly with apprenticeships and the routes and pathways for students.

The Coleshill School staff met with Judith Bagley, group learning and development manager and Steve Moore, group human resources director.

Sertec has 10 sites across Europe and supply components to the some of the world’s leading automotive manufacturers, including Jaguar Land Rover.  The company has grown rapidly over the last few years and now boast over 2500 employees with a turnover of £250 million.

One of the current apprentices at Sertec, Sean Rhodes, gave a presentation about his apprenticeship, starting from when he completed his GCSEs, to A Levels, and now, working towards an NVQ in engineering, studying at Birmingham Metropolitan College for a foundation degree.   Sertec has an outstanding apprenticeship programme and they really invest in their staff

Mr Smith-Childs, headteacher of the Coleshill School, said:

As business partners we will now be looking to work closely on apprenticeship opportunities for our students, starting as early as next summer.  There are lots of other opportunities as well, such as: our students being able to gain work experience within the engineering industry, Sertec supporting our practice interviews for Year 11 and Sixth Form, and presentations from Sertec at future Career events that we will host.

As we are part of the Arthur Terry Learning Partnership we will also look for Sertec to form links with our other partner schools.   We are extremely pleased to have formed such an exciting business partnership and are looking forward to working with, and supporting Sertec over the coming years.”
