Hill West Primary School, part of the Arthur Terry Learning Partnership (ATLP), has been ranked among the top three primaries in Birmingham in a new guide to schools in the region.
The Real Schools Guide – every primary school in Birmingham and the Black Country, published by the Trinity Mirror data unit, aims to give parents a comprehensive guide to schools in the region. The data rates attainment, attainment for all, progress and attendance and Hill West has scored five out of five in all areas, placing the academy as the third – and top performing non-faith primary – school in the city. It is also rated as 256th school nationally out of 14,600 primary schools in the UK.

Our children love coming to school, reflected in their high levels of attendance and achieve outstanding results, not just in their standard assessment tests but across all aspects of the curriculum.”
She added that Hill West pupils achieve excellent outcomes in EYFS (The Early Years Foundation Stage) with above national percentages of children meeting the expected and exceeding standard.
In 2018, the school is among the top eight per cent of schools in the country for the successful teaching of early reading, after 95 per cent of pupils passed the phonic screening check in year 1, earning government praise for the, ‘outstanding achievement’. In addition, significant percentages of children achieved the greater depth standard in year 2 and year 6, with 57 per cent of the year 6 cohort achieving the greater depth standard in grammar, punctuation and spelling and 35 per cent achieving this standard in reading and 33 per cent in maths.
In a letter to staff, pupils, parents, carers and other members of the Hill West learning community, national leader of governance and chair of governors, Andrew Staples, who led the school to achieving a national governor mark, writes:

It is a relentless approach to the learning and opportunities offered to our pupils that has been recognised in this ranking. Their individual effort within our community is recognised and much appreciated.
The relationship with all the schools within the Arthur Terry Learning Partnership has allowed the sharing of good practice across all the schools within the Trust and we look forward to developing this still further.
There is, however, a very important group of people whose effort we should also recognise. The pupils of Hill West themselves. It is their fantastic attitude for learning, their drive to learn and support each other and their individual effort to attend school that has enabled Hill West to feature so well in this guide, facilitated by fantastic teaching and support. It is also important to recognise the parents and carers who also contribute to the success of these students and the resulting ranking of Hill West.
