Business is blooming! Students make great strides in competition

Entrepreneurial Coleshill School students are making headline shoes after stepping up to the challenge of winning a place in the final of an innovative business competition.

In bloom! Students have a spring in their step after putting their heart and ‘sole’ into competition

The Young Enterprise Company Programme aims to inspire young people to become the entrepreneurs of tomorrow and help them develop practical business skills. A total of 15 year 10 Coleshill students, who have been participating in the venture since November, have scooped up awards at every stage of the competition with their own shoe company.

Now, they are hoping to walk away with first prize at the final on 8 May.

The budding entrepreneurs worked together to set up their own fully-functioning business to design, manufacture, promote and sell a product of their choice.  After designating their own board of directors, ‘Bloom Shoes’ was born and since then the team have been hand-painting bespoke, customised canvas shoes and accessory bags.

In March, Bloom set up a stall at the Young Enterprise trade fair in the Royal Priors Shopping Centre in Leamington Spa to sell their products to the public.  Not only did they have a fantastic day of sales, but the team were also judged by the organisers on their stall presentation, product, customer service and marketing techniques.

These results then carried through to the Coventry, Central and North Warwickshire Showcase, held on 21 March at IBM in Warwick, competing against eight other schools.  For this, the team were required to produce a full company report based on their experience over the last few months and then deliver a presentation to the judges and other teams in the local area.

Science teacher, Miss Duffield, said:

Our students were impeccable at the IBM event, demonstrating their confidence, charisma and professionalism at every stage.  The hard work over the last six months came together and Bloom Shoes were awarded Winners of the Showcase, as well as taking away the Award for Best Customer Service from their performance at the trade fair.  These students now move into the next phase of the competition and will be competing in the County Final on 8th May 2019.  We are so proud of them.”
