By Alexander Zarifeh, Arthur Terry School.
On the evening of Friday 29 March 2019, seventeen Arthur Terry sixth formers, and staff, took part in the annual Sutton Coldfield YMCA Sleepeasy event. Amy Kitteridge, Arpit Datta, Matt Cotter, Charlotte Hirons, Marcus Harrington, Megan Houghton, Ella Bowkett, Maddie Sladden, Vincent Mesrine, Ethan Mullis & Hannah Lea plus staff; Messrs Whitehouse, Coleman, Brierley & Zarifeh, Miss Rawlins & Miss Khirodhur slept on the floor of the Gracechurch shopping centre to raise awareness of the national homeless crisis. The motto of the event is, ‘sleep rough, so others don’t have to’.

Further Arthur Terry students kicked off the evening’s events entertaining the participants with their musical talent. The students who voluntarily performed were Jack Dallas, Harriett Perry, Isobel Tranter, Kiera Davies and Hannah Poulson. Huge thanks to Mr Loffman and Miss Deekes for once again coordinating the student performers.
The evening was a tremendous success with bangra dancing, drum workshops, free pizza and Nandos alongside hot drinks and soup to keep the participants’ spirits up.
Though under cover of the Gracechurch shopping centre, young and old were able to experience something of the hardship of sleeping on cold, unforgiving concrete.
Thanks also to Mrs Wilson and the Duke of Edinburgh team for generously loaning the participants’ sleeping bags and roll mats.
Congratulations to everyone who endured a sleepless night for such a vital cause. See you again next year!
